Born in India and immigrating to the United States in the mid-90s as a software engineer, I have embarked on a transformative artistic journey as a ceramic artist based in San Jose, CA. Within the confines of my home studio, I meticulously handcraft a unique line of fine, aesthetic and functional pottery.
My introduction to ceramics as a medium took place in 2014 when I encountered a pottery teacher during a visit to India. This encounter sparked my passion for working with clay. particularly in crafting terracotta jewelry. Upon my return to the US, I began honing my skills on the wheel at a local studio in Las Altos, learning from the expertise of talented artists within the community.
Drawing inspiration from a myriad of influences throughout my life, particularly the intricate thread work of my family, my body of work reflects a fusion of these diverse sources. Aesthetics and form take center stage in my creations. The process of working with clay is a dialogue, where I perceive the clay guiding and shaping the final outcome. This organic interaction instills a level of unpredictability, making each piece distinct and unrepeatable. Although my work may not exhibit the machine-like precision of mass production, the finished result exhibits a remarkable strength and durability. Embracing the physicality of the technique, I predominantly rely on my hands and a select set of tools.
My artistic endeavor aims to intertwine utility and enjoyment with a twist of complexity, evoking awe and sparking a sense of disbelief – "Is this made of clay?" I incorporate elements from various art forms such as knitting, crochet, basketry, fashion design, and interior decoration, weaving and extruding clay to create captivating compositions. A vibrant palette of underglazes, meticulously applied before and after each firing, enhances the patterns and subtly introduces contrasting colors. As an intrepid explorer, I delight in experimenting with different ceramic materials and processes, continuously pushing the boundaries of the medium's capabilities.
For my creations, I primarily utilize porcelain, complemented by a blend of personally formulated glazes and commercially available underglazes. These meticulously crafted pieces undergo multiple firings in an Electric Kiln, culminating in the realization of their unique artistic vision.
Through my artistry, I endeavor to infuse clay with a sense of wonder and challenge preconceived notions of its capabilities. Each creation serves as a testament to the beauty and complexity achievable through this captivating medium, leaving viewers captivated and inspired by its transformative potential.
